The Passing of Pope Francis

A statement from our chair.

Dear Fr Shaun and all our Catholic Church brothers and Sisters,

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the news from the Vatican City regarding the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. As the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis led with compassion and sought meaningful reform throughout his papacy. At the age of 88, following a recent battle with double pneumonia, his earthly journey has come to an end.

During this time of mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with our Catholic brothers and sisters in Potters Bar and in the Diocese of Westminster, and throughout the world. We stand in solidarity with all who grieve this significant loss to the global Christian community.

To our ecumenical colleague, Father Shaun and his staff, as representatives of the churches in Potters Bar, we convey our deepest sympathies to the Catholic community and all those touched by Pope Francis’s leadership and example.

In this moment of reflection, we remember Pope Francis’s commitment to the poor, marginalised people, his advocacy for environmental stewardship, and his efforts to build bridges across faiths. May his legacy of compassion and reform continue to inspire us all.

We join with Christians worldwide in prayer during this period of transition for the Catholic Church.

With love and prayers
Revd David Jebb
Chair of the Churches together in Potters Bar.
